One of the worst things about experiencing financial problems is the stress and the headache that go hand in hand with it. The bill collectors calling each day and the past due notices in the mail demanding payment immediately can make even the toughest guy feel scared, depressed, and stressed.

While you might not be able to fully fix all of your money problems right now, you can most certainly better manage the stress that is associated with it. Here are a few ways that you can keep your cool and keep your spirits up as you deal with your financial struggle.

Tip #1: Access The Damage
Often times when we get stressed out over problems we have an unclear perspective of things. We either totally over exaggerate the problem or we think that it’s not really a big deal. To begin dealing with the stress that comes along with money problems you need to take a step back and access the total damage. You need to find out who you owe, how much you owe, what’s been reported to collections, etc.

Tip #2: Own Your Situation
It doesn’t matter how it happened, you spent too much money, you let your credit card debt get out of hand, got taken to the cleaners in a divorce, got behind on your taxes, or lost everything in a failed business – the fact is you are in trouble right now. You need to own your situation, recognize that this is where you are and accept that it is your responsibility to dig yourself out of the hole you’re in and pick yourself back up.

Tip #4 Take Charge
An important element of dealing with the stress associated with money worries is to stop thinking and acting like a victim. You need to take charge of your situation and begin to make a plan to change it. Contact your creditors explain your situation, ask if you can negotiate your balance, ask if you can get a payment arrangement, ask if late fees and penalties can be waived, etc. You will find that the more you get actively engaged in trying to come up with strategies and solutions, the better you will feel.

Tip #5 Seek Guidance
Remember you are not a superhero. If things are just way too big for you to handle on your own, don’t feel bad and don’t be to prideful or arrogant to seek out some guidance from a trusted advisor. Reach out to a credit counselor, a pastor, an attorney, anyone you trust that can be a sounding board for you and provide you with wise counsel.
Tip #3: Stop Worrying
Guess what? Worrying about your situation is not going to help you, so stop! Worrying usually ends up being counterproductive– as you spend so much time being fearful and worrying about the problem that you fail to take the time to concentrate on solutions.
